flotsam and jetsam opening
Flotsam and Jetsam’s tiny shop on Richmond Rd has always been one of my favourite stores. Cameron Woodcock the owner, has a wonderful, whimsical eye and is remarkably good at finding beauty in the most interesting of places. He finds and up-cycles old light fittings or indeed things that were never light fittings in the first place, into something practical and beautiful again. He also has everything from old Tonka Toys (for grown-up collectors) thru to old tables, metal storage containers and vintage chairs. He has moved the wee shop into the old Lord Ponsonby site and now has two floors to spread his fabulous sense of design over. Sunday saw the shop opening and we sped along to have a look, and I even managed to buy a fantastic old print. We loved the jugs that were hand painted by artist Michael Mitchell – a practical piece of art. A new shipment of French Jielde industrially inspired lamps should be landing sometime soon. I hear also that there is a container coming from the US. We will let you know when it finally arrives and the treasures are unpacked! What I have always liked about Cameron, is that he always makes sure there is an inexpensive something in store – from an enamel jug for $35 or old vintage bottles for $5, as well as the higher priced items. We were very taken with a large old chest of drawers with metal handles for $1200, and the re-framed vintage prints for around $425.
The store will be open 7 days, 10-5.30pm Monday to Friday. Saturday the opening hours are 10-4.30 and Sunday 11-3.00. Flotsam and Jetsam – Where good things are found!
