world – boring gets you nowhere wfw2013
Boring gets you nowhere is a very apt title for this collection, as WORLD is never, ever boring. The soundtrack last night at the opening night of Wellington Fashion Week 2013 illustrated this point beautifully with The Cure, Britney and KISS all accompanying the dizzying array of WORLD clothing on show. The hair was done by Micheal Beel in collaboration with ghd, with super bobby pinned hair, bobs, finger waves and the good old mens DA (Ducks Arse) all represented and glitter-finished. It was a sexy little collection with fitted dresses, slinky floor length gowns and sequins. The standouts though were the coats – cashmere blocked black and camel, wool plaid mid-length and my favourite – a black and grey knee length coat with fuschia pink lining. I loved the detailing at the back with a v-shaped vent at the back, and an elasticated belt over the top in purple.
For all the fantastical,eye-popping suits in large florals for men that we associate with WORLD, there is also a lot of office wear with a twist that is both tailored and beautiful. Slinky black lace dresses and mid calf ball gowns with a fifties-feel, covered in sequins were all included.
It certainly felt like winter with opaque stockings on the models and studded court shoes from Number One Shoes dressing the models. Makeup was done by Olivia Wild – this being her first show that she styled, and she also directed the makeup for the entire wfw week. Both Francis and Denise were present of course as this was not only the first show at WFW 2013 but also the first time WORLD had shown on the catwalk in Wellington! Those of us based in Auckland take very for granted that we can often see catwalk shows in and around town, so this is the welcome appeal of WFW itself. More fashion for the people! The great thing about this, and most of the other shows, is that you can walk right out of the show and buy the clothes straight off the rack.
The nails were just fantastic, and was a welcome continuation of the nail art we saw at NZFW2013. The spectacular nails were done by Bouy in Wellington.
