orange crush

Orange, or Tangerine, was THE colour for interiors last year according to Pantone.  But who cares that it WAS the colour and supposedly isn’t now?  Not me.  I am still loving it and using it in interiors. It is an infinitely warm, happy, energetic colour. It is a great colour to add to a black and white scheme, an all white scheme – and works a treat with all black. One of these days I am going to paint my bedroom black – I know I keep threatening it, but I really will! Interestingly orange and blues in the right tones can fit well together as can yellow and orange – emerald green and orange… the list goes on… here are some of my favourite pieces of orange at the moment…

I just did a shoot for HOMESTYLE using bold colour, and I decided to use orange.  The decision was made infinitely easier by the fact that The Daughter’s room is painted in PORTERS Oompa Loompa.  It is a fantastic colour, and a client just put it into a mid century inspired children’s bathroom.  Love it. I had girlfriend’s over for lunch the other day and we used the gorgeous CITTA orange edged Etiquette Carp Lunch Plates ($79.60 for four) mixed in with all my collected blue and white china.  It gives the deep dark blue a shot in the arm and amps it up a bit. I bought them over the winter, but they have decided to keep them on over the summer as well.  Wise choice.

Orange and velvet – I’m going to love a combination of my favourite colour and my favourite fabric. I adore velvet – even during the summer it is such a gorgeous fabric – are rich and sumptuous. This cushion is part of the collaboration better Zest and LeeAnn Yare with Collected by LeeAnn Yare. Available from Collected by LeeAnn Yare, both on-line and in store

I love the quirky mind of Jonthan Adler.  He started out as a ceramicist but has ended up turning his hand to a huge variety of all things interior.  I love this take on a zebra rug – nobody has died to make the rug, and it has a huge amount of fun attached… The rug is available from Mondegreen and retails for $175.  I would drove to put this in the kids bathroom, or somewhere – it is just too gorgeous.

Deadly Ponies does it again with this showstopper of a bag. Mr Chain Gang in this amazing tangerine colour is part of Liam Bowden’s new summer collection called SandCastles.  The bag is in-store now and available at Superette and also Children of Vision – it retails for $589.

I love Toodles Noodles.  Beautifully handcrafted things by Liora Saad.  Originally Californian, Liora is now firmly calling New Zealand home. You will often see her at markets selling her wares, but you can also get her on-line at her Etsy Store.  I love this japanese fabric Gift Wrap (Furoshiki) called A Night In Monarco – in green and orange. It retails for $63.95. You can go and check out her website as well here.

Cameron from Flotsam and Jetsam has the cleverest eye. As well as finding treasures from all over New Zealand and the USA, he occasionally turns his hand to designing pieces of furniture when he sees a gap in the market.  There stools are reminiscent of the old science block stools from college when I was teenager (and we will not try and work out how long ago that was…).  They retail fro approx $120 and come in a range of colours… Flotsam and Jetsam can be found on Ponsonby Rd, Ponsonby Auckland.

  1. Hi there, I loved this article on homestyle and I was wondering where the birds tray is from. I have thing for trays! Thanks heaps.

    • The tray came back in my luggage from IKEA in California the last time I was there, but I think it is still stocked currently. LeeAnn Yare at Collected stocks it from time to time… from memory it wasn’t expensive. For an incredibly beautiful tray, try for the prettiest tray ever…

  2. Hi, I love your style! I have been looking for a chevron rug for my daughters room. Can I ask where you got the beautiful multi coloured one from? Thank you x

    • Thanks! The rug is from Armadillo & Co which is stocked by The Ivy House – they are custom designed, fair trade rugs and from memory that one is about $1500. You can choose the size and colour combination you want and they organize it from there… Good luck! The hunt for rugs is a crazy one – there just never seems to be a good selection here in NZ. Freedom have some great rugs at the moment interestingly…
