cheap and chic

I have always loved the concept of beautiful things for your home and that you don’t need to spend a fortune to achieve it.  We don’t always have a huge budget to make our spaces perfect, and sometimes it takes more skill to do things on a budget…

Kmart offered me a challenge of doing a room on a budget from their new seasons interior delights as part of #kmarthome.  I was very happy to take them up.  Originally they gave me a budget of $100 – to see what I could do with it but I did slightly overspend.  By twenty two dollars. But I figured that wasn’t a huge overspend and they wouldn’t mind too much…

So here is my room (which you might have seen already on Instagram). I decided to do a bedroom because all the things I liked lent themselves to a pretty, floral room. Obviously I supplied the bed, the wall lamp (shade from Madder and Rouge), the vase from Jonathan Adler and the candle from Designers Guild.

I started with the lovely floral bedspread which was just $19 and added the Confetti Sheet Set ($22).  I just loved multicolored dots and this set would be great for either a boy or a girl. The Striped Cushion comes in two colourways and I chose the Emerald and Yellow stripe ($12). The trick with that cushion would be to replace the inner with a feather one if your budget could stretch that far…

The Two Tone Side Table ($35) would work just as well as a coffee table in a tight space as it would as a bedside table. The Blue House Lantern ($9) and the Ceramic Pineapple ($12) in Yellow add a dash of fun, while the fantastic Wire Basket ($12) adds some practicality holding magazines in this case.  They come in the blue but also in lovely bright orange. They are hard to find as they seem to sell out the minute they arrive so maybe ring around to see if you can find them.  At that price they are worth the effort.

My other picks from the current collection is fantastical bright and cheerful Mayhem SB Quilt Cover Set ‘Geo’ ($19) and the fun Roomate Storage Hamper ‘Fox’ ($12). Practical AND fun!

  1. hi there, room looks great. Are you based in Auckland? If so can you please tell me which Kmart you got the side table and sheets from? Couldn’t see them today in St Lukes, thanks!

  2. Hi there Rose, I had to go out to Henderson for the side table, but that was few weeks ago. The sheets I got from St Lukes about 10 days ago. All of those pieces should be in store for a few more months, so maybe ring around? I did have to wait a bit until the pieces I wanted were in. The sheets were in with the children’s bedding if that is any help? I am waiting for the Geo Duvet to come in…
