The ever-evolving Flotsam and Jetsam on Ponsonby Road has had a few changes. The store in essence has split with “Flotsam” remaining on Ponsonby Road and “Jetsam” opening under Repco Auto Parts – corner of Great North Road and Beaconsfield Street in Grey Lynn. The new space is full of large pieces of furniture and objects of interest that have caught Cameron’s eye. The prolific collector has finally allowed us to see what he has been hoarding in the space.
Two thirds of the space are taken up with his treasures, with one third filled with shelves to the ceiling – and there are more things stored away for us to see at a later date. I had a bit of a look while we shot the space recently and it would be an understatement to say that Cameron has an amazing eye for the beautiful, the battered and the unusual.
There are his trademark neon signs, large battered pieces of wooden furniture, display cases, concrete garden creatures (including the best preserved seal with a ball on its nose), and tire planters. There are wooden signs, geometric planters, lights, ladders and vintage jam jars – and everything in-between. I would say that a weekly visit may be in order as the space is going to be different every time you come. Cameron is talking about having short visits from other artists and collectors – so keep watching.
The space will only be open two days a week for now – friday and saturday. The hours will be a hospitable 10am til 4pm. Go visit now. You won’t regret it!
All the beautiful shots are as usual by the Lovely Michelle Weir of Studio Weir
