Last month, Mt Maunganui’s BlakChaos hosted the launch of Saben’s autumn/winter collection, The Natural Moderns. Saben doesn’t have its own store, instead being stocked in retail outlets throughout the country. For designer Roanne Jacobson, and her fabulous team, part of the delight of launching the collection at BlakChaos was the joy of seeing the entire collection on display, in one store space. It’s a rare occurrence for them.
The lovely Roanne has spent the past 10 years building Saben into a brand that produces timeless bags, with great attention to detail alongside an enduring practicality. From travel bags that zip out to larger versions of themselves (to accommodate your holiday shopping, of course!) to coin purses that have a clip so you can easily attach them to the inside (or out) of your larger handbag, these bags are built to survive years.
I’ve always felt that a good handbag is a piece worth investing in, especially as I’m not one to switch my bag from day to day (too much effort!). And if you’re going to invest, leather is the best way to go. Roanne has been working with high-quality leather for so long, she can’t smell it anymore. Considering the smell of leather is one of its great delights, I feel like that kind of sacrifice perfectly demonstrates her commitment to her work.
So, what about the bags? From re-introducing their classic shapes and styles in new colourways, to introducing new favourites, The Natural Moderns is a range that truly has something for everyone (as cliched as that sounds). While it still feels like summer at the moment, come the bleak, greyness of winter, the colours in this collection are sure to brighten even the dreariest day. And if delicious, soft leather in enchanting hues isn’t your cup of tea, there are also stunning wee beaded purses in the shapes of eyes and lips, as well as layered up textures dripping in hardware.
But my personal choice? As a wearer of black, I’m all about introducing texture to my outfits to add depth. With that in mind, I simply cannot go past the casual cool of the classic Pia bag in perforated lamb leather with metal eyelets. It’s absolutely drool-worthy. Though, the same could be said about the rest of the collection too!
